1990 El Paso County Courthouse. Courthouse Cornerstone

In early 1987 newly elected County Judge Luther Jones proposed construction of a new County Courthouse to replace the structure built in 1917. A bond issue was proposed and adopted by the voters that same year. After considerable effort by a citizens' committee and former County Commissioners Mary Haynes, Orlando Fonseca, and Martie Jobe Georges, the new courthouse and 800 car garage were under construction by early 1988 and were completed on time in early 1990. The new courthouse is considered by many to be one of the most modern and efficient in America and has won several national awards for its design.
